William Davison is found in the County of Flint Index with address Nant Mawr and notation that he served one year. William was not originally on the Hawkesbury Memorial but was added in 2020. He is remembered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and in the Soldiers Died database.
William’s service record confirms he was born in Buckley and gives his address Nant Mawr Rd. He enrolled in the Royal Garrison Artillery in July 1916, apparently after serving 50 days with 9th Btn. RWF. He gave his age as 31 years, 1 month and occupation farm labourer. He embarked 19th August 1917 from Southampton and arrived at Le Havre the next day. He was posted to 123rd Siege Bty RGA on 29th August 1917 and he was killed in action 25th September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). 840 men from the British forces died in Belgium that day, including 9 from the RGA buried at Menin Road South Military cemetery.
The service record identifies brothers Joseph age 56 (in 1919), Thomas 52; and sisters Elizabeth Millington 54, Nant Mawr Rd, Sarah Shelbourne, 34, Llong. Brother Joseph Davison of Nant Mawr Road was identified as next of kin.
William Davison was born 21st April 1885 (baptism 8th August 1885 at Bistre), father Joseph and mother Harriet, then living at Spon Green. The 1901 census shows the family at 24 Nant Mawr; Joseph 60, Harriet 59, Joseph 17 a brickworks labourer. Sister Elizabeth and her husband Samuel Millington are at 23 Nant Mawr and brother Joseph and wife, Mary are at 11 Nant Mawr. Joseph and Elizabeth and their families are still living in Nant Mawr in 1911. William has not been found in the 1911 census.
