Rogers, Alfred

Alfred Rogers was the husband of Cecily Rogers, Humphrey Lane, Urmston, Manchester. He was born in Buckley in 1887 the son of John & Anne Rogers (nee Berks). In the 1891 census for Lane End the family were John Rogers 37 brickburner b Hope, Anne 39 b Hawarden, Mary A 16, Esther 11, Samuel 9, William 6, Alfred 4 b Bistre. Mother Anne died in 1891 and John apparently remarried. In 1901 at Mountain Rd: John 47 tobacconist, Jane 50, Samuel 19, William 16, Alfred 13 colliery labourer. Alfred has not been found in the 1911 census. Brothers Samuel and William were living in Knowle Lane.

Alfred married Cecily Winifred Shawcross in 1913 in Barton upon Irwell. They had a son John born in 1914. Cecily was the daughter of John & Mary Elizabeth Shawcross of 14 Jackson Street, Stretford. Post War Cecily lived at Manor Farm, Humphrey Lane, Urmston and later Buxton Road Stretford.  She died in 1972.

Alfred enlisted 25 Jan 1915, arrived in France in March 1917, and died of wounds from a shell in 1918.

Alfred is also remembered on the Stretford War Memorial.and on a family grave at St. Matthew’s.
