Joseph Knight was the husband of Mary Elizabeth McDermott (formerly Knight), 44 Milford St., Mold, and the son of Hannah Knight of Lane End, Buckley. He was born in 1884 in Buckley. The 1901 census lists him living in Buckley in Brook St, Lane End. He was a 17 year old coal miner – a waggoner, working below ground. He was a single man living with his widowed mother Hannah, 39 yrs and his two sisters Elizabeth 12 and Selina 11. Joseph Knight married Mary Elizabeth Wilcock, at Buckley St. Matthew in 1909. In 1911, Joseph 27 working as a stonebreaker was living in Mancot with Elizabeth b Milford St Mold, and daughter Violet 1 day old. From newspaper accounts we know they had another child (possibly Sidney McD born 1915). Mary Elizabeth married James McDermott in 1919 and her address once again became Milford St (No. 44).
UK Soldiers who died in the Great War accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms the military details on the left and adds that he enlisted in Buckley. His medal index card also on Ancestry, lists his three medals . It also says his first theatre of war was France and he entered it on the 2nd December 1916. the card states that he ‘Died of wounds’.

An Army chaplain has communicated with Mrs. Knight, wife of Private Joseph Knight, stating that her husband was wounded at the front in a recent engagement and has subsequently died in hospital. The deceased soldier was about 30 years of age. He leaves a widow and two children. Mrs. Knight is a sister of Miss Wilcox and Mrs. Evans, Bridge St., Mold. Before joining the Army over two years ago, the deceased soldier lived at Mynydd Isa and has been employed as a collier, and also as an ironworker
The Register of Soldiers effects in which the army calculated what moneys were owed to deceased soldiers, includes an entry for Joseph. This source says he died of wounds in Belgium on the 4th August 1917 His Mother received a total of £20 .. 6sh .. 2d in two separate payments
