Samuel Jones, was born in 1891, just in time to be recorded on the 1891 census with his family. Head of the household was Charles Jones, age 38, a Coal Miner who had been born in Hawarden, Flintshire. His wife was Jane Jones aged 34. She had been born in Oswestry. Their home was in Ewloe Green, Hawarden. Their daughter Rosa was 6 and their son John was 4. Both had been born in Mold, Flintshire. Their Son Chas. Hy. Jones was 1 and son Samuel was 6 months. These two younger children had been born in Hawarden. A nephew, Robt. Chas. Lewis, aged 23, who was single and a Coal Miner, had been born in Mold, was also recorded on census night.
In 1901 the family was living near the Mission Church, Ewloe Green, Hawarden,Cheshire. Head of the household was still Charles Jones aged 48, a Coal Miner. (This time he was recorded as having been born in Buckley, Flintshire). Jane was age 43, born Shropshire. All the rest of the family on this census were said to have been born in Buckley. Their daughter Rosena was 16, and worked as a Domestic Servant. John W. was 14, and was a Labourer at the Coal Mine. Sons Charles H. was 11, Samuel 10, Richard E. 8, George Thos. 6 and baby Frank was 1.
There is no specific address for the family in 1911, except Ewloe Green,Flintshire. Charles was still head of the household and then 58. His occupation this time was recorded as a ‘General labourer, not working.’ His wife of 27 years Jane was 53. She had given birth to 11 children, 3 of whom had died. Son John W. was 25, single and a Collier, Waggoner. Son Charles H. was 22, single and a Collier, Fitter. Samuel was 20, single and also a Collier, Fitter. Richard Edward was 18, and was a Brick Yard Labourer. George Thomas was 16, and was a Pottery Labourer,. Frank was 11 and at School. According to this census all the children, except John , who had been born in Mold, were born in Ewloe Green, Flintshire.
His Flintshire WW1 Index Card (Ewloe F5) tells us that his period of service was 1 year and the card was signed by a J, Jones, perhaps, his mother, on the 30th October, 1919. He was age 25.
