Lewis, Richard

Richard Lewis was born in 1893 in Hope Flintshire to Noah Lewis and Hannah Shone.

In the 1901 census Noah Lewis is 52 years old, his wife Hannah is 46 and the family consists of Sarah 21, Richard 8, Kate 5, James 3 and George who is also 3. They were all born in Hope but are resident in Penymynydd. Noah is a coal miner hewer.

In the 1911 census Noah is 62 and still working as a coal miner. Hannah is 56, has been married for 36 years and had 14 children, 5 of which are alive and 9 have died, ‘Dick’ Lewis is 18 and a ‘Bricklayers Labourer. Kate is 15, George 13, James 13, Sarah is dressmaker, 31 and single with a daughter Ida lewis. The family are resident in Penymynydd.

Richard Lewis enlisted in Buckley, the date is unknown. He was awarded the Victory and British war medals

The 2nd battalion South Wales Boarders spent 1918 in France. It is likely that Richard was killed in the battle for Outtersteene ridge.
