Joseph Leigh Howell grew up on Celyn Farm in Northop, therefore is named on the Northop memorial. However his link with Hope and Caergwrle is not so strong. So far the only link appears to be that his parents moved to live in Hope Village prior to the Great War. In the 1911 census Joseph’s parents Gilbert and Mary Emma (nee Simpson) were living there with their youngest daughter, 31 year old Mabel Gertrude Howell. Gilbert died in 1914, and Mary died in 1922. Mabel lived in Rhdymwyn when she died, unmarried in 1964.
He was born in Bagillt in 1875, the 4th of 5 children born to Gilbert and Mary Emma (nee Simpson) Gilbert. Follow the link to read his story
