Jones, Arthur Rowland

He was born c1879 and was the son of Rowland and Margaret Jones, of Liverpool and husband of Elizabeth Jones, of The Nook, Chapel Road, Prestatyn. L

He enlisted in 1915 and was serving as First Officer on board the ill-fated RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-20 at 2.15pm on Friday 7th May 1915 and sank 27 km off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland with the loss of 1,198 passengers and crew and 761 survivors. He was in charge of lowering Lifeboats 13 -21 and he commanded Lifeboat 15 which saved the lives of 80 people , some of whom were plucked from the water. He survived the sinking of the Lusitania but he was killed in action on 2nd February 1918, when the ship he commanded was the ‘Avanti’. He is listed on the Prestatyn Memorial.
