William Davies

Gunner William Davies, 4190907, Royal Artillery, was the son of William and Elizabeth Davies, and husband of Kate A. Davies of Leeds. From a grave at Bistre, he was the grandson of Thomas and Mary Ann Peters of Mold Rd. Their daughter Elizabeth married William Davies from Wrexham. He died 22 January 1942, age 25.

William was born 26 July 1916 in Wallasey. He was the son of Elizabeth Peters of Buckley and William Davies of Wrexham who at the time of William’s birth was a Police Sergeant/Fireman in Wallasey. After his father’s death in 1922, William and his brother, Stanley went into a Police Orphanage in Woolton, Liverpool, while his mother returned to live in Buckley with her two daughters, Bessie and Frances. At the time he was called up, William was working as a driver for Shones’ Haulage in Buckley. William married Kate Ransome in Wallasey in 1940. She was from Leeds and they had one son, James William Davies.

William served with his brother-in-law, John (Jack) Parry. They were both sent to Egypt, serving in the 76 Anti-Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery. William was told that everyone had to leave the area. He knew that John was not far away so he went in a lorry to get him, but as they were leaving the area they hit a mine. William died instantly on 22nd January 1942. John was badly injured and was taken on a hospital ship to Tripoli where he died from his injuries 9th March 1942. William is memorialised on the El Alamein Memorial, Egypt and John is buried in the Tripoli War Cemetery, Libya.
