I really have no idea why Richard Carroll would be here in Saltney, but I do think he probably came to the area after the 1911 census as I cannot find him locally on that census.

What we do know from some Army Records such as the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919, is that he was born in Keel, Machel, Co. Cork.

Richard Carroll in the Ireland, Casualties of World War I, 1914-1922 just gives Keel, Ireland as his birthplace.

Richard Carroll in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929 (No 302879) gives the names of his Legatees – Brothers Cornelius, Dan and John and sister Mary all given – £2.6s 11d plus War Gratuity of £1.10s.0d.

There is a little confusion on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Database, as his Regimental number is given as 17885 but the Graves Registration Document (2) on CWGC) gives the number as 17888.   I wrote to the CWGC Support Team and they said it was a clerical error all those years ago.

I cannot find a Medal Card for him.

Any help in proving Richard was living here and/or any family information would be gratefully received, but someone remembered him for his name to be put forward for the Memorial
