Jones, Herbert

Sadly, try as I might, I cannot find a Herbert Jones on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, so any help to identify Herbert Jones would be gratefully received.   He is also on the Hawarden WW2 War Memorial, his name was added at the bottom of the 4th Tablet.  Please click on the link to see the entry.

I looked through the Hawarden Grammar School Admissions Register E/GS/1/10 and found 3 possible Herbert JONES

1857/2741 JONES, Herbert Date of birth 29th March 1925 N.W.R. Sub Station, Hawarden, Father Linesman on Rlwy.  Date of Entry – 15th September 1936, Hawarden N.P., Date of leaving – 10th April 1941, Merchant Service.

857/1234 JONES, Herbert John Date of birth – 14th September 1910, 92, Chester Rd., Shotton, Father – Ironworker (Deceased), Date of entry – 19th September 1922, St. Ethelwold’s C. of E., Schl. £6. Date of leaving – 24th July 1925 – Clerk Summers.

2 JONES, Herbert, date of birth – 3rd June 1883, Clayton House, Buckley. Father – Foreman Bricklayer, Date of entry – 7th September 1896, St, Mathew’s Buckley, £3 Bursery, Date of leaving – July 1898, Bricklayer.

The obvious one, of course is Herbert Jones, born in 1925, he would have been the perfect age and he, when he left school, went into the Merchant Service.  However, I have searched the 1939 National Register for him and hit a blank wall, as he would still have been living in Hawarden in 1939, unless the School did not alter his home address, as he didn’t leave school until 1941.

Any help to make sure that this Serviceman is not forgotten would be gratefully received.   His family made sure that his name was added after the Plaques were completed at Hawarden show the strength of their dedication.   However he was remembered on the School Roll of Honour – The Roll of Honour was dedicated at Hawarden Grammar School on the 3rd February 1951 with a Remembrance Service for the 47 former pupils who died in the 1939 – 1945 World War.  As recorded in the Chester Chronicle Saturday 10th February 1951.
