The census of 1901 records him living with his family at Penllan Axton in the Parish of Llanasa,Holywell. Head of the household was Matthew H Jones who was 45 and a Stonemason who had been born in Bangor. His wife Maria was 48 and came originally from Dyserth. Their listed children were William J 19, a Labourer, Robert J was 17 a Gardener, Sarah Elizabeth was 15, John Alun 13, Thomas 9 and Llewellyn was 6. John had been born in Prestatyn but the rest had all been born in Llanasa.
Ten years later and the 1911 census records the family, still living at Penllan, Axton, Holywell.Matthew Henry was 54 and a Lead Miner. His wife of 33 years, Maria was 54. She had given birth to 9 children and one of them had not survived. The children listed in the household in 1911 were, Sara E 23, John Alun 21 and Thomas 18 were both Coalminers, Llewellyn was 12. Arthur Williams was a Grandson aged 8.
