Albert Edward Roberts was born in 1890 in Hope Flintshire to Robert Roberts and Mary Jane Knight. Robert Roberts was born in Minera Denbighshire in 1861, Mary Jane was born in Liverpool in 1865 and they married in 1888.

In the 1891 census Albert 3, was residing with his mother 27 and father 30 in Parr, in the parish of St Helens Lancashire, Robert was a coal miner.

In the 1901 census, Albert was 12 years old and had been joined by Elsie Ann 8, Blanche 6, Emily Olive 5, Ernest 4 and Robert Cyril who was 9 months old. The family was living in Gwalia in the parish of Hope Flintshire and Robert was listed as a coal miner.

In late 1901 Robert Roberts died aged 40 years old.

In the 1911 census Albert was 23 and a coal miner, hewer. The other family members during this census were Albert’s mother Mary Jane Roberts 47; she’d  had 11 children, 4 of whom had died. Blanche was 17, Emily Olive 16, Ernst 15, Robert Cyril 11, Gwendoline 10. The sister of Mary Jane, Fanny Peet 62 was there forthe census. The family was living at Rock View Castle Street Caergwrle.

His medal roll card is available via ancestry.co.uk with his service number 33898 in the Welsh regiment and 52712 for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He entered the French campaign on 18th December 1915 and at some point was wounded in the stomach. During his later service in the 3rd reserve battalion RWF he was based in the UK. The medal roll shows he was awarded the Victory, British and Star medals. He was discharged from military service on 9th February 1918 and was awarded the Silver War badge in recognition of his service and to show that he had done his service for the country.

Albert died on 10th January 1920. The death was registered by his brother Ernest and the causes of his demise were listed as his military service, gunshot wound received 6th July 1916 leading to anaemia and gastric ulcer.

He is buried in Hope cemetery.
