Robert Hinton Irvine was born in Llanrwst, Denbighshire on 7 September1891.

The 1891 Census, a year before Robert was born states that his parents were Christopher Irvine aged 36, who was born in Ireland and employed as a Watchmaker. His mother Anne aged 33, was a Dressmaker. Mr & Mrs Irvine lived at 76 John Street, Llanrwst.

The family moved to Holyhead, Anglesey at some stage. The 1901 Census tells us that the family lived at 20 Wall Street, Holyhead. In 1910 Robert obtained employment as an Assistant Pawnbroker in Flint, Flintshire. He lived in a flat above his work premises at Stanley House, Mumforth Street, Flint.

On 1 September 1914, Robert enlisted as a Private with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers  (Territorial Force). On enlistment he is described as 5′ 8″ tall, a declared age of 22 years 10 months, chest measurement 35″ with a range of expansion of 2″.  His physical development was described as good and according to the Recruitment Officer and Medical Officer he was fit for Military Service. His Record of Service Papers show that he was at this time living at 1 Reece Terrace, Bagillt, Flintshire.

On 31 October 1918 he was wounded and conveyed to 55th General Hospital, Boulogne where he died on 8 November 1918.
