Frank Jones was the son of John Samuel and Margaret Jones (nee Williams), who, I believe, married in St. Michael’s Church, Brynford in 1880 (Flintshire (Mold) C02/1/E106). Incidentally John Samuel Jones came from a large family of at least 14 children.
The 1901 census was the first census that Frank appeared on. The family were living near Britannia House, Holywell, John Samuel Jones, 40, a Cooper at the Lead Works,was head of the household with his wife Margaret, 39, son Herbert T., 18 a Colliery Labourer (Below),Rosina, 15, Gwaldys, 6 and Frank 4 all being born in Holywell.
Between the censuses, there were great changes to the family fortunes, Frank’s mother Margaret had died and John Samuel, his father, had remarried in 1911 in St Mary’s Church,Flint (Flintshire (Mold) C07/2/164) to Ann Jane Griffiths, who was a widow with a daughter. They were recorded on the 1911 census living at Pierce’s House, Boot, Bagillt, John Samuel states that 6 children had been born to him and 3 had died, but this was crossed out by the Enumerator as it was referring to his previous marriage. His new wife Ann Jane, 34, states that she had been married 2 months and she had been born in Bagillt. Her daughter Sarah Jane Griffiths, 10 had been born in Garston, Lancashire. Frank’s sister Gladys , 17, was a Silk Weaver.
Frank, 14, was not living with his father, he was living with his sister Rosina, now married to George Owen Jones. They had married in 1901 at St James’s Church, Holywell,( Flintshire (Mold) C12/4/E292). Their home was at 4, School Row, Ffynnongroew, Mostyn, Flinshire (8 rooms). All the family were bilingual. Head of the household was George Owen Jones, 26, a Stoker (Boiler) who had been born in Mostyn. His wife Rosina (Frank’s sister)was 25. There was an adopted child in the household, George Jones, 16 months old, but no place of birth was added. George Owen & Rosina had been married 4 years, there had been no children born to them.
Ancestry gives us this information – Frank Jones in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919, birth place, and enlistment was Holywell and his residence was Bagillt. This also confirms his regimental details above.
The UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929 includes an entry for Frank Jones. It says the Sole Legatee was his sister Rosina Jones who was paid £1 18s on the 22nd March 1916 and his War Gratuity of £3 .. 10sh on the 25th October 1919.
The British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 includes a card for Frank. It tells us that his first Theatre of War was the Balkans, and he entered it on the 8th August 1915, sadly he was to be killed 11 days later on the 19th August 1915 age 18 years. The reverse of the card tells us that Rosina had emigrated to Canada and had sent for her brother Frank’s medals in 1924. She was named there as his next of kin.
