Most of the memorials that are on this website have been built to commemorate people who had some  connection to Flintshire. However located on the wall inside St. Asaph Cathedral there is a very impressive (probably copper) memorial dedicated to the 5 Welsh nurses who are known to have died in World War I. None of which to my knowledge to date had any significant connection with Flintshire. However the fact that is located in St. Asaph has brought it under our watchful eye and their stories are starting to take shape on a dedicated section of the St. Asaph memorial site. If anyone knows why it is located there please let us know.

The first name on the list is Frances Ethel Brace who was a Staff Nurse in the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service and died of Dysentery/Malaria on 21 September 1916. She had been working for a very short time in Salonika where she became ill and was transferred to Malta, which during WW1 became known as the ‘Nurse of the Mediterranean’. Over 125,000 sick and wounded were treated there, and anyone interested can find out more via the following links: –

A book is also available to read on-line by the Rev’d Albert MacKinnon  Malta : the nurse of the Mediterranean (1916)
