Ernest G Warner was born in 1884 at Rattinghope Mill in Shropshie. He was the son of Henry Warner and his wife Francis Ann (nee Catt). He is recorded on the census of 1891 living with his family at Halghton, Whitchurch. Head of the household was Henry Warner who was 40 and a Miller who had been born in Warwickshire. His wife was Francis A aged 25 who had been born in Oxfordshire. Their listed children were Beatrice 11, Amelia 10, Ernest G 6, Walter and Francis A were both 3 months old.

The next census of 1901 lists Ernest Warner aged 17 as a Cattle man on a farm at Halghton, Hanmer owned by a William Griffiths. Listed at the farm were William Griffiths, his wife and their 3 children and four servants including Ernest.

In the 1911 census, we find that Ernest had joined the army and was listed as a Driver in the Royal Field Artillery in India.

UK Soldiers who died in the Great war 1914-19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk  confirms the regimental details at the top of this page. It adds that he enlisted in Chester and that he died of wounds.

As a military man he would have been in the first wave of soldiers to join the war. His medal index card also on Ancestry tells us he was formerly a Driver in The Royal Horse Artillery  and it lists his three medals including the 1914 star which confirms that he was in the war very early.

The register of Soldiers’ effects in which the army calculated monies owed to deceased soldiers, lists Ernest Warner and notes that his sole legatee was his married sister “Amelia”  Milly Coffin who received £65..9s..1d.
