Samuel was born about 1890. We know from army form w 5080 ‘Statement of Relatives’ that his parents were William and Jane Dean of Talyn Banks Treuddyn. There were four brothers named – George 48, William44, Joseph 42 and Arthur 39. This form was completed in September 1919 by Jane Dean.

We have found the family on the 1911 census living at George’s Row, Treuddyn  but Samuel wasn’t there. The household consisted of  William, a stone quarry worker, his wife Jane and sons George and Arthur. This form tells that Jane had given birth to 7 children but only 5 were still living.

His Flintshire Roll of Honour Card  says he served for I year and 4 months and that he went missing on 27th May 1917 ‘Not heard of since’ presumed killed. It was signed by C Williams.

His army papers show that he was sent to France on 15th July 1916.
