Huleatt, Francis Hugh

Francis Hugh Huleatt was born in Egypt on the 8th April 1887, the son of Hugh Huleatt and his wife Ellen Kathleen.

The 1891 census shows the family living at 94, Eglington Road, Woolwich, Part Plumstead.   Head of the household was Hugh Huleatt, 30 a Captain Royal Engineers who had been born in Plymouth, Devonshire.   His wife Ellen K., 29 had been born in Norwich, young Francis, 3 had been born in Egypt as stated above.   His sister Kathleen was just 1 year old.   There were 2 servants in the house, one a nursemaid, age 15.

1901 shows young Francis Hugh, 13, a pupil in Wellington College, Crowthorne.

He married Daisy Catherine in Bombay Cathedral on the 23rd February 1911.

The 1911 census shows him in India, married, however Daisy Catherine, 22 is in a Military camp in England, not sure where on the census, stating that she had been married under 1 year and no children had been born and she had been born in Rochester, Kent.

Francis had 3 medal cards. One showed the Theatre of Ward first served in- France.   Date of entry therein – 24th May 1916 (crossed out ) and 24th July 1915 written underneath.   Deceased Died of Wounds 28th February 1917.    Reverse of Card – Mrs. D. F H Huleatt in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929 tell us that there was no Legatee as such – some the money was sent to Cox & Co. £7 17s 6d in 1921 – C.p Bas £9 3s 7d April 1917 – again in October 1917 £10 13s 11d and there was a War Gratuity of £59 5s 10d.

HULEATT, Francis Hugh, M.C. Major, Royal Field Artillery, Elder and only surviving son of Col. Hugh HULEATT, R.E., Chief Engineer, Western Command, by his wife, Ellen Kathleen; b. Cairo, Egypt, 8th April 1887; Educ. Warden House, Deal; Wellington College, and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, S.E., where he won the Sword of Honour; gazetted 2nd Lieut. The Royal Field Artillery 18th Dec. 1907; promoted Lieut 18th Dec. 1910; Capt. 30th Oct. 1914, and Major; served in South Africa & India; was home on sick leave when war broke out in Aug 194, and was not passed fit for service for a year, but was appointed Adjutant of the Inverness Horse Artillery (T.F.) 25th Sept. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from July, 1915, when he was given command of a Battery in the Royal Field Artillery, and died 28th Feb. 1917, from wounds received in Action.   Buried in Dernancourt.   Capt Huleatt was mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette, 18th May 1917), by F.M. Sir Douglas Haig, for gallant and distinguished service in the field, and was awarded the Military Cross.   He married at Bombay Cathedral, 23 Feb. 1911 Daisy Catherine, dau of Spencer Woodhams, and had two children: Noelle, born 19 Dec. 1913, and Hugh, born 15 Aug. 1915.(his birth was registered in Chester, Cheshire West CAS/105/59)

I believe that Daisy Catherine was to marry again in the December Quarter of 1918 to Gerald Newbold Openshaw in St. Mary’s Church in Chester (Cheshire West   CE14/11/177)
