I believe that Christopher Llewellyn Price was the son of James Francis Price & Elizabeth McBride, they married at St. Mary’s Church, Lache-cum-Saltney on the 28th June 1892.

Christopher Llewellyn Price was born about 1893 and Baptised in St. Mary’s Church, Lache-cum-Saltney on the 7th October 1894.  He was baptized on the same day as  his brother John James. Christopher Llewellyn seems to have gone by the name of Llewellyn on some censuses. The mother, Elizabeth died before the 1901 census.

1901 census records the family living at 37, Ewart Street, Saltney, Mold Junction, Flintshire.  James Price  38 was a  Widower.  He was a Railway Joint Maker in S. Shed who had been born in Radnorshire.  His listed children were Llewellyn 8, John J 7,  Elizabeth H H 5, Elsie G 4, and Lily 2.

The 1911 census records that James, 48,  was working at an Engineering Works. He had remarried, to Ruth Amelia Piercy in a Civil Ceremony in Chester in the September Qtr of 1901, (ROC/43/141).  In 1911 they had been married for 9 years.  She was 43, and had been born in Altringham.   She had joined the family at 5, Bridge Terr. Stone Bridge, Saltney.  9 children had been born, but 2 had died. (2 children’s names had been written on the census form and crossed out). The listed children in the household were  Christopher Llewellyn, 18an Apprentice Iron Moulder, James John 17 was a Steam Hammer Driver,r Elizabeth Hanmer, 15 was working in Tobacco Manufacturing, Elsie Gwendoline was 14,  Lily 12 and James, 10 were at school.

UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk   confirms Christopher Llewelyn’s  regimental details as above and tell us that he was born and enlisted in Chester. His  medal Card,  also on ‘Ancestry’  us that his first Theatre of War was France and the date of entry there was  the 14th February 1915. It lists his medals.

Christopher Llewellyn  married Emily Mary Gibson in 1916 at All Saint’s Church, Hoole, Chester, (CE31/3/82)   Emily Mary  died in 1921 and I believe that her death certificate is CHR/3/15 at Cheshire West Register Office.  She was age 25 years and died of TB, diarrhoea and heart attack.

Flintshire WW1 Index Card (Saltney Ferry F 28) tells us that Christopher Llewelyn’s  period of Service was from the 5th August 1914 to 14th October 1918, the card was signed by James Price, perhaps his father or his brother?   It was not dated but most cards were signed in 1919/1920.   It gave his address as 5, Bridge Terrace, Saltney.

Many thanks to Alan Gaffiney for details on Emily Mary Gibson’s Death Certificate.  The cause of her death was ‘TB, diarrhoea and heart attack’. She was  Christopher’s widow and was 25, ( so was born in 1896).   The person who notified the death was E. Gibson, occupier at 15 Edna Street where she died. I believe that her parents were Alfred and Eliza Gibson. The notifier could well have been her mother.

Christopher Llewellyn’s brother John James Price  served in and survived the war.  His index card in The Flintshire Roll of Honour (Card Saltney Ferry L 167) tells us that his address was the same as Christopher Llewellyn. Her was Private 69874 of the 5th Royal Welsh Fusiliers.,  His period of Service was from 5th August 1914 – 28th March 1919.   The card was signed by John James Price on the 31st October 1919.

(John James was in the 5th Res. R.W.F. and was probably at the Annual Training Camp at Aberystwyth on the 3rd August 1914 when all Training camps were ordered by the Government to “Strike” camp and return to base.   The newspaper report of this can be seen on the Home Front pages of Connah’s Quay on the flintshirewarmemorials.com website.   Flint Station was brought to a standstill with the returning and leaving soldiers).
