Lewis Stuart Whittingham was born in Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire, Wales in 1882.

The 1901 Cenus shows that the family lived at New Hall, Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire.  The head of the family was Lewis Browne Whittingham aged 59, a Farmer.  His wife Mary Augusta Whittingham aged 48 and their four children – Lewis Stuart Whittingham aged 19, an Estate Agent’s Clerk, Olive Louisa Whittingham aged 18, Kathleen Jennie Whittingham aged 11 and Beryl Marie Whittingham aged 9 years.

Lewis’s parents and the rest of the family at some stage moved to North Wales and lived at Killarney, 26 Butterton Road, Rhyl, Flintshire.

By 1911 he was living as a Boarder at Aston Munslow, Craven Arms, Shropshire and was employed as Land Agent for Millichope Park Estates.

Lewis was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with 7th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was eventually posted to France and the Western Front on Wednesday 25 October 1916.  He was killed inaction during the Battle of the Somme on 28 February 1917.

The National Probate Calendar for 1917, which was administered in London on 20 December 1917 states that Lewis Stuart Whittingham of Millichope Park Estates Office, Munslow, Shropshire on his death bequeaths the sun of £4,172. 8s. 5d. to Mr Edward Humpreys.

On 2 February 1918, a payment of £55. 1s. 0d. was made to Mr Edward Humpreys, being monies owed to 2nd Lt Whittingham.  On 29 November 1919, a further payment which is recorded as a War Gratuity of £5. 0s.0d. was also made to him.

He is also remembered on a Remembrance Plaque at The Royal Alexandra Hospital, Marine Drive, Rhyl, Flintshire and on The North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales.
