John Edgar Ghent was born during February 1883 at Polesworth, Warwickshire, England.

The 1901 Census shows that the family lived in Market Street, Polesworth, Warwickshire.  The head of the family was George Ghent aged 45, a Grocer and Baker.  His wife Jane Ghent and their son John Edgar Ghent aged 18, a Grocers Assistant.  Also living with the family was Anne Wood aged 17, a Shop Assistant and May Anne Stonehouse aged 22, a Domestic Servant.

Some time after this the family relocated to North Wales and lived in Butterton Road, Rhyl, Flintshire.

In 1909 John married Clara Owen of 24 Wretham Road, Handsworth, Birmingham and they lived at 53 Montegue Road, Handsworth, Birmingham.  John at this time was employed as an Insurance Agent (Collector).

Following the outbreak of the war John enlisted with 15th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

The National Probate Calendar for 1918, administered on 13 September 1918 in Birmingham states that John Edgar Ghent had left the sum of £332.0s.0d to his wife Clara.

On 7 November 1918 and 24 April 1919, payments of £4.13s.8d and £3.8s.3d were made by the War Office to Clara Ghent, being monies owed to her husband John.  On 6 July 1920, a further payment which is recorded as a War Gratuity of £9.0s.0d was also made to her.

John Edgar Ghent is remembered on a Remembrance Plaque which is situated in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Marine Drive, Rhyl, Flintshire and on The North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales.

There is no Flintshire Roll of Honour Card for him at the County Archives Office, Hawarden, Flintshire.
