Emlyn, Archibald Carlisle Melbourne

Archibald Carlisle Melbourne Emlyn was born in East Kilda, Melbourne, Australia on 14 November 1899.

The 1911 Census shows that the family were living at 14 Wellington Road, Rhyl, Flintshire.  The head of the family was John Emlyn aged 53, a Bookseller and Stationer. His wife Elizabeth Emlyn aged 55 and their three children – Winifrede Gwladys Emlyn aged 26, who was employed in the family business, Oswald Ambrose Emlyn aged 25, a Political Speaker and Archibald Carlisle Melbourne Emlyn aged 11.  Also living in the house was Sarah Williams aged 26, a General Servant.

In 1917 Archibald enlisted as an Ordinary Seaman with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.  He was stationed at the Royal Naval Depot, Crystal Palace, when he was admitted hospital and died on Tuesday 22 January 1918.

Seaman Archibald Carlisle Melbourne Emlyn is also remembered on a Roll of Honour Plaque which was on display at The County School, Grange Road, Rhyl.

He is also remembered on The North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales and on a Remembrance Plaque at The Royal Alexandra Hospital, Marine Drive, Rhyl, Flintshire.

There is a Flintshire Roll of Honour Card for him at the County Archives Office, Hawarden, which is undated but was signed by Gwaldys Emlyn (sister).
