William Henry Ellis was born in Rhyl, Flintshire on 9 April 1899.

The 1911 Census shows that the family lived at 2 Ty Newydd Terrace, Rhyl, Flintshire.  The head of the family was Elizabeth Ellis aged 50, a Widow.  Her husband Edward had died in 1909.  There were six (6) children living at home – Edward Charles Ellis aged 26, who was employed as a Plasterer, Llewelyn Ellis aged 21, who was also a Plasterer, Thomas Ellis aged 19, an Errand Boy, Florrie Ellis aged 14, William Henry Ellis aged 12 and Rosey Ellis aged 5.

During 1917, William enlisted at the Recruitment Centre, Mold.

It is not known when, but William’s mother, Elizabeth Ellis emigrated to the United States of America and lived in Detroit, Michigan.

On 3 January 1919 and 29 January 1920 payments of £7.17s.4d and £3.7s.1d were made by the War Office to Elizabeth Ellis in Detroit, being monies owed to her son William.  A further payment of 12s.11d was made to William’s brother.

He is also remembered on The North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales and on a Remembrance Plaque at The Royal Alexandra Hospital, Marine Drive, Rhyl, Flintshire.

There is a Flintshire Roll of Honour Card for William Henry Ellis in the County Archives Office, Hawarden, which is undated and unsigned.
