Blackwell, Allen

We have traced Allen on the 1901 census living in Top y Wern, Rhosesmor with his very large family. His father Edward was a 60 year old lead miner and his mother Harriet was aged 44. It seems that this was a second marriage for each of them. We think that Edward’s first wife was named Anne and we think that Harriet’s first husband was Charles Williams.

The twelve children listed include Blackwells and Williams as follows:

  • Thomas Blackwell aged 24 a lead miner
  • Ishmael Williams aged 24 a lead miner
  • Daniel Blackwell 23 a lead miner
  • John Williams 22 a lead miner
  • MA Williams (daughter 20
  • Catherine Blackwell 19
  • Catherine Williams 14
  • Elizabeth Williams 11
  • Charles Williams  11
  • Edward Blackwell 8
  • Allen Blackwell 2
  • Harriet Blackwell 8 months

We have been unable so far to locate Allen Blackwell in the 1911 census.

UK soldiers who Died in The Great War 1914 -19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms all the regimental details above and adds that he enlisted in Wrexham and says that he lived in Mold. This source tells us he was ‘killed in action’. His medal card also on ‘ancestry’ tells us which medals he was entitled to.

There is a family grave in Rhosesmor churchyard which sheds a little more light on the family story. The headstone bears the words:

“Blackwell

Edward Blackwell Top y Wern
Died August 26th 1907 age 67

Also Catherine daughter of above
Died Aug 12 1908 aged 28

Also Harriet wife of the above
who died Jan 18 1918″

Also Allen Youngest son of the above
who was killed in France Sept 20 1917 aged 19
Deeply mourned by his brothers and sisters

Also Charles, youngest son of Charles and Harriet Williams Who was killed in France April 10 1918 aged 27.

There is a John Williams  named on the War Memorial in Rhosesmor. John Williams has his own page on this website. There is a possibility that he is the sibling John Williams listed above. If  so, then this one family in the small village of Rhosesmor lost three of its sons to the war. Can anyone help us solve this one?

He is also listed on the Mold Memorial
