The Lord Lieutenant of Flintshire (Mr. Henry N. Gladstone) wanted a record of all Servicemen in Flintshire, and appointed a Committee of local ladies and gentlemen for the purpose of preparing a complete list of Ex-Service men for the County record, so cards were dispersed throughout the County and a complete record of all men who had served, including their full names and addresses, the units they had served, and distinctions gained, and also including the names of men who were killed or died as a result of war service.   They were to be two distinct cards, the “Living” and the “Fallen,” the latter having the corner cut off to distinguish the fact, signed by the men themselves or in the case of the “Fallen”, by family or friends.   That was the noble ideal, but when I came to research the men on the memorials, I found that many were missing.   I don’t know why, except to speculate that many families had come to the area for work and when the breadwinner died, many widows went back home to their families there.   I also believe that many cards were not returned, for whatever reason, perhaps they simply didn’t like forms to fill in, but anyway there were not included in the records.   On one card on the reverse, it simply said “Return to T.I. Williams, Shotton”, so many were not collected and it was left, I assume for people to take them to different points.    A Roll of Honour in the form of a book was a complete record of these cards, which was presented to the Lord Lieutenant of Flintshire on the 22nd July 1922 at a Garden Party at Hawarden Castle.   The Volume is now at the National Library of Wales at Aberystwth.   It is unique, as no other county in the British Isles has one.

Likewise, some men were missed off the War Memorials, as there names were not handed in, so I have compiled a list of the cards and found 3 on Queensferry that are not on any memorial that I know of.
