Thomas was born in Mold in 1888. The 1891 census finds him living with his family at 21 Hughes Row Mold. His father Edward Davies was 38 yrs old a coal miner who had been born in Rhydymwyn. His mother Elizabeth E. was born in Prestatyn aged 38. She was a tinplate worker. The children were Mary W. 20, a tinplate worker who had been born in Meliden.  Ann E was 18, Peter R. 14,  John D. 8, Robert 6,  Thomas 3 and Evan 4 months all born in Mold.

On the 1901 census the family was still in 21 Hughes Row.  It records Elizabeth 48, Peter R. 23,  Walter, John D 18 who was a ‘Baker Bread maker’.  Robert was 16 and worked as a ‘Bottle Washer Cellar’.  Thomas  was  18 and William E Davies a Grandson was aged 6.

Recorded on the 1911 census the family had moved to 21 Garden Place. Elizabeth was 59 and living apart from her husband. Her son Robert Davies  was 25 and a Collier. William Edward Hughes (Davies)  a grandson was a collier  aged 16.  Harriet Lloyd a granddaughter was a 12 year old a scholar. The census form tells us that Elizabeth had given birth to 11 children but only five were still alive. Six had died.

I have been unable to locate Thomas in the 1911 census. He was 28 that year.

UK Soldiers Who Died in The Great War 1914 -19, accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk includes an entry for Thomas. It confirms the military details at the top left of this page – apart from the death date. It mistakenly states the 5th of November 1915 whereas all other sources say the 15th November 1915.  This source tells us that he enlisted in Flint.

His medal index card, also on Ancestry,lists his three medals and also tells us that his first theatre of war was the Balkans (Gallipoli). He entered that theatre of war on the 8th August 1915.  He became ill and was transferred to hospital in Malta. He died there on the 15th November 1915.

The UK Register of Soldiers’ Effects also on ancestry, is where the army calculated how much money was owed to deceased soldiers. There is an entry for Thomas which tells us that his sole legatee was his mother, Elizabeth Ellen Davies. She received a total of £6 ..8sh ..2d in two separate payments.  This source says that he died in hospital from Enteric.

Thomas’s brother Robert Davies also died in the war and is named on Mold’s Memorial. His nephew William Edward Hughes also lost his life in the war and is named on the Mold memorial as William Edward Davies.  They both have pages on this website. Follow the links.
