There is an index card for Wilfred Cyril Morris in the Flintshire Roll of Honour at The County Record Office at Hawarden. It is filed with the Gronant cards. It gives the address Groesffordd,  Gronant, Llanasa.  It tells us that he was a 2nd Lt in the Berar Infantry when he died (This was part of the Indian Army) . The date of death was given as 15th December 1918. The card also gives us a regimental number 35509. The card was signed by K Roberts who signed all the Gronant cards.

On the reverse of the card is written ‘Formerly 26th Fusiliers City of London Bankers’ Corps. Transferred (after Somme) to 2nd Garrison Battalion Bedford Regiment and C.2.M.S’.

The Royal Fusiliers City of London Bankers Corps was formed in London 17th July 1915 by The Lord Mayor and City of London, composed in the main of former bank clerks and accountants. The 26th Royal Fusiliers landed in France 4th May 1916, moved to Italy November 1917 and returned to France March 1918.

The 1914-20  Medal Rolls  accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk lists Wilfred Cyril Morris as Acting Sergeant in the Bedfordshire and Herefordshire Regiment with the regimental number 35509. He had previously been in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers number 23202. His medals were the Victory and The British War medals.  There is a note that says ‘Comm: Indian Reserve 18.3.18.’

The England and Wales National Probate Calendar has the following entry ‘Wilfred Cyril of Groesffordd Gronant Prestatyn died 8th December 1918 in India on active military service. Administration St Asaph 18 September to Margaret Mary Morris widow. Effects £130’  Note the death date is different on this source.

I can find no census, birth or  marriage evidence for this man. His family history is a mystery.  All we have so far are these disjointed bits of his story. Can anyone shed any more light?
