He was born in Denbigh in 1886  (according to ‘Soldiers who Died in the Great War 1914 – 1919’ accessible on www.ancestry.com). This also tells us that he enlisted in Hackney, London NE.

The 1891 census places 5 year old Arthur living with his family in Bryntirion, Gwaenysgor in Flintshire. The head of the household was Evan Griffith Morris aged 31, a schoolteacher who had been born in Porthmadog, Caernarfonshire. His wife was Mary Hughes Morris also 31 a native of Denbigh. There were five children. Mary Elizabeth Jane was 8 yrs, Griffith Henry Morris was 6 yrs, Arthur Evan Morris was 5yrs, William Hughes Morris was 4yrs and Margaret Gwendoline was 8 months. This family spoke Welsh and English.

In the 1901 census the family was living in Laurel House Pontblyddyn. Evan G Morris was 40 and an’Elementary schoolteacher’, Mary was 40 and by now had eight children.  Mary E J was 18 an assistant school mistress, Griffith H was 17 and a pupil teacher, Arthur E was 15,William H was 14, Maggie G was 9, Marian B was 7, J Roderick was 5, Ivor D was 3.

In the 1911 census we find Arthur Evan Morris living as a boarder  in 57 Wellesley Road, West Ham. He was a 24 year old single man who had been born in Denbigh. He was a 24 year old schoolmaster working for London County Council.

There is a Flintshire Roll of Honour card for him in the Flintshire County Archives Office at Hawarden. It gives his regimental details and the address ‘The Laurels, Pontblyddyn. It says that he served 10 months in the army. It is on this card that the place of his death is written as Dacula Mesopotamia. The card is signed by Evan Griffith Morris, his father and dated 20th September 1919.
