Boyes, John

John Boyes was born in Holywell, Flintshire during December 1897 and was baptised on 9 January 1898 at Holywell Parish Church.   At that time the family resided at Back Cain, Holywell.

The 1911 census states that the family had now moved to 4 Davie’s Square, New Road, Holywell.  The head of the family was Stephen Boyes a 42 year old Coal Heaver (Unloaded coal carts in the mines), who was born in St Helens, Lancashire. His wife Sarah Elizabeth Boyes aged 41 and their three children Robert Boyes aged 15, John Boyes aged 14 and Hannah Jane Boyes aged 10 years.

On 23 June 1917 a payment of £2.15s.3d was made by the War Office to Sarah Elizabeth Boyes, this being monies owed to her son John.  On 24 October 1919, a further payment which is recorded as a War Gratuity of £3.0s.0d was also made to her.

He is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.

There is a Flintshire Roll of Honour card for John Boyes at the County Archives, Hawarden, containing very little information. Details of his medals were obtained from (www.forces-war-records.co.uk)
