Benjamin Edwards was born in Holywell, Flintshire during 1870.

The 1891 census tells us that the family at that time lived at the Carnarvon Castle Hotel, Raven Court; Holywell where the head of the family John Edwards aged 57 was employed as a Lead Miner.  His wife Sarah Edwards aged 56 was the Innkeeper and their son Benjamin Edwards aged 21 employed as a Collier.

The 1901 census shows that Sarah who was now a widow aged 66 was the Innkeeper of the Abbots Arms Hotel, Pen-y-Maes, Holywell.   Benjamin Edwards aged 30 was now employed as a General Labourer and younger brother Robert Edwards aged 18 a Locomotive Stoker.   At the time of the 1911 census the family were still living at the Abbots Arms Hotel, Pen-y-Maes, Holywell.

Benjamin’s attestation form Dated 12th April 1915 states that he had good physical development and he was fit for service. The Medical Report on an Invalid Form for him dated 18th February 1916 states that the date of origin of his disability was 31st of December 1915 and that he was suffering from Cardiac Disease and was unfit for service. The form gives his mothers home address as 5 Abbots Cottages, Pen y Maes Holywell.

He was formally discharged on 17th March 1916.

He is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.
