Lloyd, William John

William John Lloyd was born about 1898, he was recorded in the census of 1901 living with his family at Berth Du, Rhosesmor in the parish of Northop. Heard of the household was William Lloyd who was 30 and a Labourer in the Lead Mine. His wife, Sarah was 29 and their listed children were Mary 5, William J 3, Catherine J 1 and Margaret A 6 months.

The 1911 census was completed byWilliam Lloyd the father, entirely in Welsh. The address was Park, Halkyn. William snr was  40 and still at the lead works. His wife Sarah E was 40. There were four children at home William J  13, Catherine J  10, Edward A 8 and Joseph T   7. The form tells us that Sarah E had given birth to 6 children and 5 had survived. The family lived in two rooms.

UK soldiers who died in the Great War 1914-19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk tells us that William was born and enlisted in Halkyn and that he was Killed in Action in France/Flanders. This source tells us that he was originally in The South Wales Borderers with the regimental number 3891.  His medal card also on Ancestry lists his two medals and also states his original regiment and number as well as the later one.

The Commonwealth War Grave Commission tells us that he has no known grave and that he is honoured by being named on the Arras memorial.

There is a card for William John Lloyd in the Flintshire Roll of Honour at the County Record Office in Hawarden. It gives regimental details as above His occupation was recorded as a cotton spinner. It says that he served for 9 months and the card was signed  by Elizabeth Sarah Lloyd – his mother.

The Register of Soldiers’ Effects, in which the army calculated what monies were owed to deceased soldiers, includes an entry for William John Lloyd. It confirms his regimental details and his death date. A total of £5.. 8sh .. 6d was paid to his father William.
