Jones, Llewelyn

There is a card for Llewelyn in the Flintshire Roll of Honour at the County Archive Office in Hawarden which gives his regimental details. The address is Springfield Cottage, Pentre Halkyn. It says that he served from 9th November 1915. The card is signed by his wife Florence May Jones. (We believe she was from Bagillt in Flintshire and that they married there in 1916). His army records tell us that they had a daughter, Norah Francis born 9th January 1917. We don’t know if he ever saw her. We know he had three sisters. They are listed in his army record as Eliza Jane Edwards, Hannah Simister and Nora Jones.

His service record exist and is accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk.  Much of it is legible but not all. We have extracted the following details.

He enlisted and attested on 9th November 1915. He was 5’5″ tall and weighed 11 stones. We think (it is not very clear) that his occupation before joining the army was ‘Gateman’.  He was ‘posted’ in November 1915 but we know not where. He was appointed to acting corporal in 1916 but reverted to private in January 1917 when he arrived in Alexandria for duty ‘in the field’.  On the 1st April 1917 he was wounded in action in Gaza. After that there are a number of minor medical issues listed but most unreadable.

He was fatally wounded on the 10th March 1918. He was shot in the back and suffered ‘compound fracture of vertebral spine’. A telegram was sent to Springfield Cottage Pentre Halkyn. It says:

“I write you with regret to inform you your son 241260 Pte L Jones Royal Welsh Fusiliers is dangerously ill at ****** ? hospital Cairo Egypt suffering from gun shot wound back.”

We note that this assumes that the recipient is his mother but as his parents are not listed on his Relatives Form (presumably deceased) we assume that this is a mistake and should have said ‘your husband’.

There is a further telegram from Cairo to army records in UK stating that he died of his wounds on 27th April 1918.

Eventually Florence May Jones was asked by the army to acknowledge receipt of  her husband, Llewelyn’s possessions. They were listed as 1. ID disc, 1 Devotional book, 1 hankerchief, 1 purse, 1 shilling, 1 wallet, letters, photos 1 book.

She duly signed the form but added the following poignant note at the bottom:

“Dear Sir,
The late Pte L Jones 241260 had a silver wrist watch also 9ct gold signet ring.
Would you mind trying to find them?
Yours faithfully,
F.M. Jones”

Florence May Jones had further correspondence from the army concerning the receipt of medals and commemorative scroll and plaque and also concerning her pension. She was awarded 19/6d separation allowance and pay of 1/9d. Her address changed. At one time she was living in Bagillt (the place she originally came from) and another time she was staying with her sister in law Hannah Simister at 13 Knowles Square, Off Hollins Road, Hollinwood, Oldham.
