Jones, Robert Evan

Robert Evan Jones was born about 1896.

The census of 1901 records him living with his family in Waen Gwernaffield. Head of the household was Evan Jones aged 32 who was a Gardener (Domestic) who had been born in Rhydymwyn.  His wife was Harriet 32 who had been born in Gwernaffield. Their listed children were Sarah 6, Robert E 5 and Joseph P 3.

Ten years later in the census of 1911, they were living in Cilcen Road Gwernaffield. Evan 42, described himself as a ‘Jobbing Gardener’. His wife of 17 years Harriet was 41. She had given birth to 6 children but one of them had not survived. Those listed in the household were Robert 15, a Butcher’s Apprentice – working for Price Morris, Joseph Peter 13, Frank 7 and Eliza Alice 5 were all at school. There was also a Brother in Law recorded. He was Francis Williams 48.

UK Soldiers Who Died In The Great War 1914 -19, accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms Robert’s regimental details as above. It also tells us that he enlisted in Mold and this source tells us that he died of wounds. His medal Card, also on ‘Ancestry’ details his medal entitlement.

There is an index card for Robert E Jones in The County Record Office in Hawarden.It confirms the regimental details above and adds that he served for 11 months before he died of his wounds on the 9th October 1918. The card was signed by Harriet Jones – his mother on the 29th September 1919.
