Richard Thomas Hughes was born in Greenfield, Flintshire during 1896.

In 1901 the family lived in Sycamore Terrace, Greenfield, Flintshire.   The head of the family was Henry Owen Hughes aged 28, who was employed as a Railway Goods Checker at Greenfield Railway Station.   His wife Alice Hughes aged 30 and their three children – John Henry Hughes aged 9, Joshua Hughes aged 7 and Richard Thomas Hughes aged 5 years.  There was also a Boarder living with the family, Edward Jones Davies aged 24, who was employed as a Railway Clerk.

The 1911 Census states that the family now live in Basingwerk Row, Greenfield, Flintshire.   Henry Owen Hughes is still employed on the Railway.  His wife Alice Hughes is now 30 and they now have 6 children: John Henry Hughes aged 19 who was employed as a Swiller (Basket Weaver) at the Welsh Flannel Mill, Greenfield Road, Holywell, Joshua Hughes aged 17, a Paper Machinist at Greenfield Paper Mill, Richard Thomas Hughes aged 15, an Errand Boy at Greenfield Paper Mill, Fred Hughes aged 9, Bert Hughes aged 7 and Emily Hughes aged 3.

On 25 October 1919 a payment of £26.9s.11d was made by the War Office to Henry Owen Hughes, this being monies owed to his son Richard and includes a War Gratuity payment of £16.10s.0d.

He is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.
