Stanley, John

John Stanley was born in Flint in 1899 and baptised on 8th March, 1899 at St Mary’s Parish Church, Flint. He was the fifth of six children to John Stanley and Mary Jane (Foulkes).

John Sr was born in Holywell and Mary Jane in Pantasaph and they were married on 30th March, 1891 at St Mary’s Parish Church, Bagillt.

John was a chemical labourer and they lived at No 1, 2 Court, Holywell Road, Flint and their first child, George Andrew, died in October, 1891 aged 4 months.

They moved to 40, Mount Street and then to 17, Evans Street where Mary Jane died on 20th October, 1907 aged 39. She was buried in the Northop Road Cemetery with her son George.

One source intimated that John enlisted in August, 1914 but that seems unlikely as he would have only been 15 years old; however it is not impossible as it well known that boys did lie about their age to get in.

He enlisted in Flint and died of wounds in Mesopotamia on 25th January, 1917. He was buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq (Plot XXV).

He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal and is remembered on the Flint Town war memorial. He is also commemorated on the North Wales Heroes’ Memorial Arch, Bangor.

John Sr died at 56, Church Road, Tranmere in November, 1921 and lies in an unmarked grave with Mary Jane and their son George.
