Carroll, John

John Carroll was born in Flint on 3rd March, 1883 and was the third of five children to John Carroll and Dora (Kennedy). He was a half-brother to Private James Carroll who also died in the war and has his own page elsewhere.

John senior was born in Ireland and died in early 1894 aged 58. He was a general labourer but in the 1891 census he was described as a disabled army pensioner suffering from tuberculosis.

Dora was also born in Ireland and in the early 1870s she had a relationship with a Mr Porteus, by whom she had a daughter named Alicia, who was born in Aldershot, Hampshire in 1874. However, no record of a marriage could be found.

John junior was raised at 23, Mount Street, Flint, but after his mother died in 1900, aged just 47, he went to live with his sister Catherine and half-brother James at 19, Redfern Row, Chester Road, Flint. His occupation was a collier.

John married Mary Catherine Bartley at the Register Office, Chester on 22nd December, 1906, and resided at 35, Chapel Street, Flint, with John was now employed as an ironworker. They were to have five children: John Bartley (February 1907–March 1907), William John (1909–1937), Thomas (1911–1978), Dora (1913–1991) and Edward James (1916–1989). By the time the war started they had moved to 69, Mumforth Street, Flint.

John enlisted in Flint in 1914 with the 1/5th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, No. 86. He landed at Gallipoli on 8th August, 1915. It was after this date he transferred to the Cheshire Regiment and moved to France.

He was killed in action in France, 24th March, 1918, and buried at the Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France (Plot VII, Row E, Grave 8).

He was awarded the 1914–15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, and is remembered on two war memorials: Flint Town and St Mary’s Catholic Church, Flint. He is also commemorated on the North Wales Heroes’ Memorial Arch, Bangor.

John’s wife, Mary Catherine, was born in Flint and died in September 1957, aged 73. She was buried in the Northop Road Cemetery, Flint, with her son William John and his wife Sophia Mary.
