Hugh Jones was born circa 1894, the first son of Robert & Mary Harriet Jones (nee Williams) and on the 1901 census when he made his first appearance, the family were living at Gwibnant Cottage, Whitford, Flintshire. Robert Jones, 34, a General Labourer, who had been born in Whitford, was the head of the household, his wife Mary Harriet,30, had been born in Tremerchion, Flintshire. Elizabeth A., 9, was the eldest child in the household, Hugh, 7, and his sister, Jane E. 3 were all born in Whitford, Flintshire.
The 1911 census shows the family separated, Hugh, 17, I believe, was a Cowman at Cottage Farm, Pantasaph, Holywell, Flintshire, in the household of John & Hannah PARRY, Farmer, their nephew Wm. Edward WILLAMS, 35 and 3 servants, including Hugh and his sister Elizabeth Ann, 19, who had both been born at Pwll-Hibrook, Whitford, Flintshire (Bilingual). His parents and siblings were living at 3, Dee View Terrace, Pen y Ffordd, Ffynnongroew, Mostyn. (5 rooms). Robert, 45 and Mary, 40 tell us that they had been married 19 years and on the census they put 6 children born, but this was crossed off and 7 entered, with them sadly losing 1 child). Mary Ellen, 13, Myfanwy, 9, John Thomas, 6 and Catherine Maria, 2 were the new siblings to Hugh and Elizabeth Ann was also absent.
There is a Flintshire WW1 Index Card for Hugh (Ffynnongroyw F 4) in the Flintshire Record Office at Hawarden, his mother M.H. Jones signed the card on the 25th September 1919 and entered on it “Period of Service 3 years. “Deceased” Killed in Action 26th June 1917.“
Hugh Jones in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 confirms his regimental details and tells that his birthplace was Holywell, he resided in Penyffordd and enlisted in Flint.
Hugh Jones in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929 tell us that the sole Legatee was his mother Mary H. JONES, who was paid£4 7s 1d on the 5th November 1917 and his War Gratuity of £4 10s on the 1st November 1919.
Hugh Jones in the British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 does not tell us where his first Theatre of War was nor when he entered it.
I cannot find any Attestation papers for him, they may have been destroyed by the bombings of World War 2.
