Percy Nadin first appears on a census in 1891, living with his family at 120, Hope Street,Duckinfield, Cheshire. Father, Michael Nadin 47, was an Accountant who had been born in Duckinfield, Cheshire. His wife Mary J. Nadin 36 was born in Gorton, Lancashire. Their children were Mary 21 a Dressmaker. Emma 17 a Pupil Teacher at School. Arthur E. and Ernest 13 were both Assistant Linoleum Printers. Harry 12, Albert 8 and Percy 7 were Scholars.
The 1901 census tells us the family had moved to Stamford Street (Park Villas), Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Michael 57 was a Cashier at the Iron Works. Daughter Emma was 26 and single. Son Ernest 23 was a Warehouseman. Harry 22, Albert 18 and Percy 17 were all ‘clerks’.
According to the 1911 census Percy 27, was still living with his parents. He was a Joiner at the Steel & Iron Works (John Summers & Sons). They were living at The Leonards, Ash Grove, Shotton, Flintshire. Michael 67, was a Cashier at the Steel Works. Mary his wife of 32 years, was 56. Daughter Emma was 36.
Percy is mentioned in the book ” Soldiers Died in the Great War Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Volume 28″ – It confirms the regimental details above and adds that he enlisted Shotton. It says he ‘Died of wounds’ in Egypt on the 6th November 1917.

Percy Nadin in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929 tells us that the sole Legatee was his mother Mary J. who was paid £3. 3s 4d on the 6th June 1918 and his War Gratuity of £6. 10s 0d on the 19th November 1919. There was a recharge to the Regimental Paymaster of 10/4d.

Percy was named on 2 other memorials – the Hawarden War Memorial and the memorial screen at St Ethelwold’s Church. Somebody made an effort to ensure he was remembered.
