Hughes, John E

John was born into a Welsh speaking farming family and the 1901 census records that they lived at the Station Lodge, Nannerch. His father John was born in Ruthin and was employed as a cowman probably working on the local estate and his mother Hannah was born in Dyserth. By 1911 John had sisters Margaret and Bessie and a brother Llewelyn and the family continued to live at the Station Lodge in Nannerch.

It seems that John was injured or became ill whilst serving in France with an MT (Motor Transport Company) and was invalided from France. The record states that John was discharged from the army on 17th May, 1917 and that he died about a month later although it does not say where nor the cause of his death. It was signed by an Elizabeth Williams and the address given was Bryn Celyn, Cilcain, which is believed to be the farm between Nannerch and Cilcain.  There is a grave in the cemetery in Cilcain which names a JOHN E HUGHES who was born in 1882 and died on the 12th June 1917 (Aged therefore 34/35 yrs).  Quoted on the website ‘Find a Grave’ is the  memorial reference ID  238539601.  We have no proof but it seems likely that this is him.

Ganwyd John i deulu ffermio sy’n siarad Cymraeg ac yn ôl y cyfrifiad 1901 roeddem yn byw yn y Station Lodge, Nannerch. Mi gafodd tad John ei eni yn Ruthin a chafodd ei gyflogi fel cowmon ac yn debyg iawn roedd o’n gweithio ar yr ystad lleol. O Ddyserth oedd Hannah ei fam. Erbyn 1911 roedd y teulu wedi tyfu gan fod chwiorydd Margaret a Bessie a brawd Llewelyn ac yn dal i fyw yn y Station Lodge Nannerch.

Bu farw John 12eg Mehefin, 1917. Mae’n ymddangos gafodd John ei anafu neu ddaeth yn sâl tra’n filwr yn Ffrainc yn ran o adran cludiant a mi gafodd o ei ryddahu o’r fyddin oherwydd ar 17eg Mai, 1917. Bu farw John tua mis wedyn ond nid yw’r cofrestr yn dweud pryd na ble. Cafodd y cofrestr ei llofnodi gan Elizabeth Williams, Bryn Celyn, Cilcain y credir i fod y fferm rhwng Nannerch a Cilcain.
