Jones, Samuel

Samuel Jones was the husband of Mrs. Laura Jones, of Tredegar, Monmouthshire. Samuel was born in Mold on 28 January 1884. He married Laura Lewis in 1906 and they had children Rebecca, Ivy and Samuel all born in Glamorgan and Winifred born in Buckley. In 1911 they were living at 22 Alun Terrace, Mold. Samuel’s parents were Peter and Sarah Jones (nee Corthup/Coathup) his occupation tailor. Before the war Samuel was an iron worker at John Summers. In 1920, widowed Laura Jones married widower Samuel Antrobus in Buckley.

Samuel joined the 5th Bn RWF in August 1914. He had previously served three years in the 2nd Bn RWF. He embarked 14th July 1915 on the Caledonia as part of the 53rd (Welsh) Division and departed UK 14-19 July 1915, via Alexandria 25-30 July, then reached Lemnos 29 July – 7 Aug 1915 to tranship for landing at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli. The 1/5th RWF landed at Sulva Bay on 8/9 August 1915. Samuel was reported missing on 10 August 1915 but it seems that this was not immediately recognized in his service record. The record includes the note “To be regarded for official purposes as having died on or since 10th August 1915”, but this entry was dated 28 March 1919. He was assigned a new service number in 1917 indicating he was still on the official roll at that time.

Samuel Jones was one of four Buckley soldiers killed at Gallipoli in August and September 1915, the others being John William ParryEdward Roberts and Emrys Whitley.
