William Roberts was the son of John and Sarah Roberts, of Bersham, Wrexham and the husband of Catherine Roberts of Little Mountain, Buckley. He was buried at Penymynydd St. John the Baptist Churchyard and is also commemorated with a Commonwealth War Graves memorial which identifies him as a Private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. No other military records have been found. He was born in Bersham in about 1893 and he was living there in 1911 with father John, mother Sarah and sister, Elizabeth.
This William Roberts was not named originally on the Hawkesbury Memorial but was added in 2020.
William Roberts married Catherine Harris in Wrexham registration district in 1913. This is proven by Catherine’s second marriage to Robert Wilfred Hayes at St Matthew’s, 28th July 1923. Catherine is identified in the register as Catherine Roberts, widow age 27 of Little Mountain, Pentrobin, father John Harris, gas fitter. Robert Wilfred was 21, a labourer from Mount Terrace father Joseph Hayes. He was the brother of William Henry Hayes who was killed in Palestine in March 1917.
From BMD records it seems that William and Catherine had 3 children: Irene, Edward and Sadie (the last born after William died). Catherine had more children with her second husband possibly including: Norah, Beryl, Gwyneth, Sylvia, Robert W, June and Victor. Catherine was buried at St. John Penymynydd, 8th February 1930 apparently one week before her son Victor. The inscription reads:
Royal Welch Fusilier 6725 Private W. Roberts, 15 February 1919 age 25.
Loving memory of my dear wife Catherine Hayes died February 5 1930 age 37 years.
A family tree on Ancestry.com shows that Sadie Roberts died in Australia in 2007.
