Jackson, Ephraim

Ephraim Jackson was the son of Henry and Hannah Jackson, of 39 Stanley Rd. Henry and Hannah had children: Arthur (1884), Susannah (1887), Samuel (1889), Ephraim (1890), Alice (1892), Emma (1896). The family was living at Cobblers Wood, Northop in 1891 but moved to Buckley before 1910. In the 1911 census Henry was listed as a labourer. Ephraim age 20 was a collier. Ephraim was born in Soughton (Sychdyn).

From the North Wales Coast Pioneer, August 17th 1916

Sergeant Ephraim Jackson of 39, Stanley-road, Buckley, was killed in action on July 20th while fighting in France with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jackson, and was described by Captain E. M. Sell, his superior officer, as “one of the best non-commissioned officers.”

Another Local Hero – Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jackson, 39, Stanley-road, Buckley, have received information of their son, Sergeant Ephraim Jackson, having been killed in action on the 20th ult. Sergeant Jackson enlisted in the R.W.F. in September, 1914, and had been out in France for many months. A short time ago he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In a letter to his parents, his captain says: -“He was one of my best non-commissioned officers, and his loss is deeply felt by the whole company.” Sergeant Jackson was 26, and before enlisting was employed by Messrs. G. Watkinson and Sons at their Elm Colliery.

Ephraim Jackson died with the 10th Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Delville Wood on 20th July 1916.The 10th Bn were part of 76th Brigade, 3rd Division, and arrived on the Somme in early July 1916. They took part in the fighting at Delville Wood on 20th July 1916 when the battalion encountered heavy machine gun fire while moving up to Buchanan Street. Casualties in this action were 228 officers and men. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded that day to Cpl. Joseph Davies of Tipton, Staffordshire and Private Albert Hill of Denton Lancashire, both of whom survived.
