Thomas Caradoc Hughes was the son of Thomas and Annie Hughes of 67 Luxmore Rd., Liverpool. As shown in the 1901 census for Helsby Rd., Walton on the Hill, Liverpool, Caradoc Hughes was born in Buckley in 1896. Father Thomas was a Builder’s managing clerk who had been born in Flint; mother Annie was born in Crewe. Other children were born in Denbigh 1877/78, and Walton 1880 to 1889. 

The census of 1911 records the family living at 67 Luxmore Road, Walton on The Hill, Liverpool. The Head of the household, Thomas Hughes was then 60. He was a Quantity Surveyer who had been born in Northop. His wife of 35 years, Anne was 55 years old. She had given birth to 8 children, 7 of whom were living. The listed children on this census were Cadwalader aged 23 who was a Piano Tuner, Mabel was 25 and Thomas Caradoc was 15 and worked as a Solicitor’s Clerk.  This census confirms again that he was born in Buckley.

UK Soldiers Who Died in The Great War 1914-19  accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms the regimental details at the top left of this page and adds that Thomas Caradoc enlisted in Liverpool. This source tells us that he was ‘Killed in Action’ in France/Flanders.  His medal index card also on Ancestry lists his two medals.

The Register of Soldier’s Effects in which the army calculated what moneys were owed to deceased soldiers includes an entry for Thomas Caradoc Hughes. A total of £6 .. 8 sh .. 10d was paid to his father in two separate payments.

Thomas Caradoc is remembered on the family grave at Walton, Thomas Caradoc who fell in action and was interred in France 19 Aug 1916 age 20. The inscription shows that his brother Cadwaladr fell in action and was interred in Belgium, 27 June 1917.
