David Jeffereys, was born in Seacombe, near Birkenhead, Cheshire, 7th July 1886. He was the son of Thomas Jeffreys and Margaret. David’s father died in September 1891 and eventually his mother remarried Samuel Roberts of Bodfari. David had an elder sister, Eunice (born 1876) who had married Robert Edward Jones and they were living at 27, Clifford Road, Seacombe.

At some point prior to 8th March 1915, David emigrated to Canada as on this date he enlisted into the Canadian Army at London, Ontario, Canada, ‘For The Duration Of The War’. He initially named his brother Thomas Jeffreys, of 231 Queens Avenue, London, Ontario, Canada as his next of kin. This is later struck out in red ink on his attestation papers and his sister, Eunice Jones, 27, Clifford Road, Seacombe, Cheshire, was nominated as his next of kin. In his attestation paper, he confirmed he was single, a labourer by trade, with previous military experince in the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment. His description is of 28 years 8 months old, five foot six and a half inches tall, chest of 33 inches with a 3 inch range of expansion. He had grey eyes, brown hair, with tattoo marks on left arm and scars on both knees. He was deemed ‘Fit’ at his medical examination for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, at London Ontario, on 8th March 1915.

As a point of interest there is some variation of his surname on some of his Canadian Military service records, sometimes called Jeffries, but the same service number of A1052.

Private Jeffreys has a ‘colourful’ conduct sheet, mainly for being absent without leave.

Private Jeffreys amended his next of kin to be his mother, his military will dated 1st June 1916, states, “In the event of my death I give the whole of my property and effects to my mother Mrs S Roberts, 1 Stanley Terrace, Denbigh, North Wales”.

Private Jeffreys was ‘Killed In Action’ 30th August 1918, in France.
