Dunn, Robert Henry William

This career soldier first appeared on a census in 1861. He was living with his family in Kentbury Berkshire. The household comprised of head, William Dunn 74 a Major General (Artillery Regiment), his wife Margaret Duncan Dunn 43. Their children were William H 18, Margaret W 17, Edward W 15, Thomas D 14, Frederick W 9 and Robert H who was 3. There was a 14 year old visitor from Sweden – Arthur Gordon and there were 17 servants.

The following census of 1871 finds the family living in Inglewood House in Berkshire. The head of the household was widow, Margaret Dunn 53 and a ‘landowner’ who had been born in Leeds. The children still at home were married daughter Margaret W Whenyates, Frederick W Dunn 19 an undergraduate, Robert Henry William Dunn was 13 and a pupil at Eton. Looking after the needs of this family of four were 22 servants.

There is an index card for Robert Henry William Dunn in the Flintshire Roll of Honour at the County Record Office in Hawarden. It gives the address ‘Althrey’, Bangor. His military career is detailed as follows.

He joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1877  and he served in the India and Burma campaign.

He was Adjutant 1st volunteer Battalion in the RWF 1890-95.

He left the army in 1896

Was in reserve of officers and commanded the depot at Wrexham during the South African war.

Was Brigade Major and Brigadier General of the Welsh Border Brigade. He then had a brigade of Territorials when they were formed. He gave this up in 1912.

In August 1914 he formed a Pals Battalion of  RWF and was then given a brigade in the Welsh Army Corps.

He was a JP and Deputy Lieutenant for Flintshire

The index card explains that he was the son of General William Dunn of Inglewood, Hungerford, Berks. His wife was Catherine Constance Selina (nee Erskine).

The England and Wales National Probate Calendar. Index of wills and administrations accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk published the following in 1917.
