Robert John Hughes was born in Bagillt, Flintshire during 1897.The 1901 Census tells us that the head of the family was Thomas Hughes aged 41, who was employed as a Baker.  His wife was Mary Hughes aged 38 and their 7 (seven) listed children  were Edward Hughes aged 16, Annie Hughes aged 14, Joseph Hughes aged 10, Jane Hughes aged 8, Thomas Hughes aged 6, Robert John Hughes aged 3 and James Hughes aged 1.

The 1911 Census states that the family lived at 13 Hope Cottages, Gadlys Lane, Bagillt, Flintshire.  The head of the family Thomas was then employed as a Platelayer in the local Iron Works.  There was no mention of Robert John Hughes on this census record, but there is one additional member of the family, namely, Albert Hughes aged 8 years.

Robert enlisted as a Private with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1917 at The Barracks, Wrexham.

He was killed in Action on Monday 8th October 1917 during the third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), aged 20 years.

On 12 February 1918 a payment of £1.11s.1p was made by the War Office to Robert’s father Thomas, this being monies owed to his son Robert.  On 22 December 1919, a further payment which is recorded as a War Gratuity of £5.10s.0d was also made to him.

He is also remembered on The North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales.
