Jones, Frank

Frank Jones was born in Holywell, Flintshire during 1897.

The 1901 Census states that the family lived at Britannia House, Bagillt.   The head of the family was John S Jones aged 40, who was employed as a Cooper at the Bagillt Lead Works.   His wife was Margaret Jones aged 39 and their 4 (four) listed children  were Herbert Jones aged 18, a Colliery Labourer, Rosina Jones aged 15, Gwladys Jones aged 6 and Frank Jones aged 4.

Frank’s mother, Margaret Jones died sometime after 1901 and subsequently his father re-married an Ann Jane Griffiths and they lived at Pierces House, Boot End, Bagillt, Flintshire.  Frank, however, lived with his sister and her husband George Owen at 4 School Row, Ffynnongroew, Flintshire.

At the outbreak of the First World War Frank aged 17 years enlisted with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at The Drill Hall, Halkyn Road, Holywell, Flintshire.

Frank arrived in the Balkans with the Battalion on Sunday 8th August 1915. He was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on Thursday 12th August,1915 aged 18 years.

On 22 March 1916 a payment of £1.18s.0d was made to Rosina Jones (Sister)  by the War Office, being monies owed to Frank Jones.  On 25 October 1919, a further payment which was recorderd as a War Gratuity of £3.10s.0d was also made to her.

His Medal Index Card states next of kin as Mrs Rosina Jones. 1371 Charles Street, Box 892, North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Frank Jones is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.

There is no Flintshire Roll of Honour Card for him at the County Archives Office, Hawarden.   Details of his medals were obtained from Ancestry.co.uk
