This is Claire Lewis a researcher who is working on the Hanmer Memorial for this website. Hanmer was in Flintshire in WW1

Claire was working on the stories of Bertie and Albert Cartwright (probably cousins) when she was alerted to the fact that these two were named on an additional memorial just outside Hanmer as well as on the main Hanmer Memorial.

She was directed to this dilapidated bus shelter on the Whitchurch Road at Eglwys Cross.

A small slate memorial to the two soldiers had originally been made for the Sunday School but at some point, somebody decided to move it to the bus shelter. In fact when Claire got there she learnt that the memorial had been removed for safe keeping pending a decision about what to do.

And here is part of the solution. A brand new smart bus shelter is nearly finished.

And look at this! A spanking new information board telling Bertie’s and Albert’s stories is to be placed inside the new bus shelter. The board includes a QR code so that people with smart phones can link directly to this website.

Claire worked with local historians Rev Clive Hughes and Simon Birch on this fabulous project. Congratulations to the three of them for rescuing a piece of local history and for keeping the memories of these two soldiers alive. A massive thank you from flintshirewarmemorials.com

We’ve seen many many war memorials as this website has developed but never ever before has there been one in a bus shelter.
