Smith, E.A.D. (aka Dean, E.A.)

I  believe that E.A.D. Smith is the same man as E. A. Dean who was listed on the Bangor Memorial Arch Panels (every parish is shown there) as I believe he was adopted by Frederick & Mary Smith from Bella Vista, Sandycroft.  (Perhaps he was known as Edmund Arthur Dean Smith).

On the Absent Voter’s List of 1919 (Sandycroft Polling District), Edmund Arthur was listed as “Dean”:-  LAWRENCE STREET – 1755    DEAN, Edmund Arthur  Bella Vista    K 38050 Stk., R.N.  (No. on the 1918 list was 3160)

Edmund Arthur Dean was shown on the 1901 census as Edmund Smith, adopted son of the above Frederick & Mary.  Frederick was 52, a Farmer, born in Stanton, Staffordshire.  Mary, 54 had been born in Hoylake, Cheshire. Edmund, 9, had been born in Bebbington, Cheshire.

The 1911 census records, show Frederick 60,  a Jobbing Gardener, listed as a widower and Edmund Dean his adopted son, 19  who was working at the Iron Works, living at “Bella Vista”, Sandycroft.

The UK, Royal Navy and Royal Marine War Graves Roll, 1914-1919 tells us that Edmund Arthur Dean was a Stoker 1st Class.  He had been born on 19th January 1892 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. It says he died from disease on the 21st June 1919.   It also tells us that his Uncle was notified of his death :- Relatives Notified and Address: Uncle: Frederick Smith, Bella, Vista, Sandycroft, Nr Chester.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission tells us that there is a “Special Memorial” and if you click on the link to this on the website and look under the citation to the “Grave Registration Online” there is more specific information on that. Also the “Registers” and “Headstone”.  There is another notation ” No action to be taken in view of the fact it is impossible to get in touch with the Next of Kin. See HC /72 (or HC/7Z)”

I cannot find any documents that give information on his birth.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that Frederick, his Uncle/Adopted father had tried to made sure that he was not forgotten.

There is a Flintshire WW1 Index Card for Edmund Arthur Dean, (Sandycroft F 4), address Bella Vista, Lawrence Street, Sandycroft.   Regimental details as above. Period of Service 19th November 1916 – 24th June 1919.   Died of pneumonia 21st June 1919.   Card signed by Fredrk. SMITH, Guardian on the 26th September 1919.

Edmund’s burial entry in the St. Deniol’s Parish Registers : –

Hawarden Burials – Page 59 No 468 Edmund DEAN “Bella Vista” Sandycroft, died at Naval Hospital, Haslar (Porstmouth) 26th June 1916 age 27 years.     (http://www.haslarheritagegroup.co.uk/)

As stated above, on the North Wales Memorial Arch at Bangor it shows his name as DEAN. E.A., but as the story reveals he was also known as SMITH E.A.D.   Please click on the link to see his name.
