Leonard Errol Walker, was born in 1892, his birth was registered at Hawarden (HAW/39/7).
Leonard first appears on a census in 1901. He was living with his family at 17 Phoenix Street Saltney. Head of the household was William Walker. He was 65 and a widower. He hailed originally from Coalbrookdale in Shropshire and was an iron Founder. The listed children were William 22, Agnes, 20, Ernest 18 (a Boot and shoe maker) and Leonard was 8.
On the 1911 census, Leonard was 19 and living at the home of his Uncle. The Uncle was William Evans 46, a farm labourer who was another widower. The address was The Beeches Cottage, Saltney. There were three Evans children listed Elizabeth 12, Maggie 8 and William 1. There was a housekeeper – Emily Mellor who was 40. Leonard Walker, nephew was 19 and worked as a Railway Plate Layer.
Leonard married Mary Emily Caddy on the 20th December 1913 in St Mark’s Church Lache cum Saltney.
UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms Leonard’s regimental information as above and tells us his residence was Mold Junction, Flintshire and that he enlisted at Chester. This source tell us he ‘died of wounds’. His medal index card also on ‘Ancestry’ states his medals as above and tells us that his first Theatre of War was France and his qualifying date was 23rd December 1915. It also just states “Dead”.
There is an index card for Leonard in The Flintshire Roll of Honour in The County Record Office in Hawarden, (Card Saltney Ferry F 34),It tell us that his address was 22, North Street, Saltney Ferry. His Flintshire WW1 Index card also tells us that his period of service was 3 years and 8 months before he was killed in Action on the 17th October 1918, Card signed by E.L.Roberts (an official who played a prominent part in the distribution and collection of the Saltney cards. He signed many of them).
He is remembered on the Plaque that was formerly sited in St. Mathew’s Church in Saltney Ferry (which was as destroyed by fire in 2008), are now in St Mark’s Church in High Street, Saltney. However on that his 2nd name is said to be Edmund and not Errol.
